W.S. Cumby is currently serving as Construction Manager for the Buckingham Friends School Master Plan renovation. The K – 8 private Quaker school is located in 44 acres in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The campus is made up of several buildings arranged around a central courtyard – the original building dates from the 1790’s with the other buildings being added and upgraded over time.
The Master Plan included the renovation of the classrooms and student cubby spaces in the main building; the demolition of the existing too-small 1950’s gym and the construction of a new, bi-level gymnasium; renovation of the existing arts building to create new arts, music and performance spaces; the construction of a new, bi-level addition, joining the new gym and arts building that provides ADA access to both the upper and lower levels of the activities and gymnasium buildings.
A new, state-of-the art science building was constructed to house a signature learning space within the school’s wooded campus. The classroom renovations occurred over Summer 2023, along with enabling demolition and site work for the Gymnasium and Science Building. The construction of the Gymnasium, Science Building and connector to the Arts building took place during the school year, with students occupying other areas of campus. Construction fencing separated students from the active work area and a temporary wall and door were constructed where the new building linked to the existing Arts building, to limit noise and secure the construction site from student access.
