W.S. Cumby Construction, along with Cicada Architecture and Northstar Owner’s Representation, recently broke ground at The Benchmark School in Media, Pennsylvania for the school’s new Innovation Space.
W.S. Cumby is providing design-build services with Cicada Architecture for The Benchmark School’s Lower and Middle School Innovation Spaces. The spaces will provide students with dynamic, hands-on interdisciplinary learning environments and a variety of physical and digital tools for students to utilize, including 3D printers, robotics equipment and craft supplies.
The project scope includes a renovation to the school’s current music room, which will become the Lower School Innovation Space. The Middle School Innovation Space will be a new addition built atop the school’s existing patio, designed by world-class architects—and Benchmark alums—Bill and Chris Sharples of SHoP Architects. The Middle School Innovation Space will feature unique finishes and a 3D-printed architectural ceiling.
“We are thrilled to be a part of such a unique project for The Benchmark School,” said Bill Cumby, Jr., President of W.S. Cumby Construction.
The Innovation Spaces will be a laboratory for students to practice critical thinking, collaboration, and creative problem solving.
