W.S. Cumby completed a major expansion project for repeat client Princeton Day School. The scope consisted of a 48,000 SF renovation to the school’s existing library, music and athletic facilities as well as the construction of a new 46,000 SF addition, which serves as an extension of the library and fine arts program.   The original design was several million dollars over budget and the W.S. Cumby team worked with the Owner and Architect to reduce the cost without sacrificing program.

Although the construction took place over a 20 month schedule, the project was logistically complex due to the fact that few portions of the existing building remained untouched by the construction and that the majority of renovation work needed to be completed during the School's summer and winter breaks.

In order to maintain on-going operations with minimal disruption, W. S. Cumby's team developed a project specific Logistics, Phasing and Safety plan in coordination with the School's Business Manager and staff.  Milestone start and completion dates were established well in advance of intrusive construction activities and plans for temporary partitions, indoor air quality management, and safe means of egress for students and teachers were communicated to the entire team at regular intervals throughout the project's duration.

Construction of the new library addition and fine arts wing were complicated by limited access around the building's exterior due to the close proximity of steep slopes and areas of wetlands.  Plans included provisions for both construction vehicle and pedestrian traffic control through the site.  At times during the project, temporary fire-rated corridors were built to provide students and teachers with safe passage through areas of construction.
