W.S. Cumby Builders and Construction Managers, along with DIGSAU Architects of Philadelphia, PA, are providing construction services for a new residence hall at Swarthmore College. The new 45,000 SF residence hall will have 21 apartment-style residential suites, which will house 128 beds along with common and support spaces. Each apartment unit will feature single bedrooms with a living, dining and kitchen area and a bathroom with an enclosed shower room. The shared spaces include student lounges, a printing room, laundry room, a trash, recycling and compost room and bicycle storage areas.

The new residence hall is also the first to incorporate the new Swarthmore College Sustainability Framework. The Framework provides standards for new construction and major renovations of existing buildings on campus. Sustainable features include geothermal heating and cooling, roof-top solar photovoltaic panels, porous paving, intensive native landscaping, a super insulated envelope enclosure and high performance windows and lighting. Achieving the College’s environmental performance goals for the new residence hall project required a dynamic collaboration effort between the College, W.S. Cumby and DIGSAU’s design team.

Upon its completion in Summer 2017, the new residence hall will be a distinctive living, learning and social hub for Swarthmore College.
